Learning all about Journalism!

For this assignment the students were to try their hand at journalism and attend an event on campus and write a “news article” about it. I like this assignment for a couple of reasons. First, everyone can improve their writing skills. Its one of the most important things that the “real world” will say is lacking in students coming out of college today. Second, I wanted my students to get out and attend a campus event. Any event. Just get out of their rooms and go. You can’t make friends unless you go outside! Third, since we are a mass communication course, journalism is important and I wanted everyone to take a crack writing just one article. Several of my students are already reporters for the campus newspaper, but for others this was their first foray into that world. Some wrote about homecoming and football games, others greek life events, campus lectures, soccer games and service projects.
